Aerides Loureiro

An Indo-Malesian genus of about 20 predominantly epiphytic, very rarely lithophytic species with long, stout, stems, loriform leaves and a simple or branched, erect or pendulous raceme of large showy flowers. Eight species are known from India. Three species are known from Kerala.

Aerides lindleyana Wight, Ic. Pl. Ind. Or. 5 (1): 9.t. 1677.1851.

This is an exceedingly beautiful species with large and showy, white suffused pink flowers that last long period.

Occurrence : Palghat, Kannur, Wayanad Districts.

Distribution : Regional Endemic (Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu).

A highly variable species with white to pink flowers on a simple to much branched inflorescence.

Occurrence : Trivandrum, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Trichur, Palghat and Kannur Districts.

Distribution : Southern India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu) to Sri Lanka.

This is related to A. maculosa Lindl., but sufficiently distinct in having an erect inflorescence and a pure magenta flowers without spots.

Occurrence : Trivandrum district only.

Distribution : Local endemic (Kerala).
