Four species are found in Kerala. 1. Coelogyne breviscapa Lindl., Fol. Orch. Coelogyne 4. 1853 (excl.syn.): J.D. Hook . 1890 : 833, pro parte; Fischer in Gamble 1928: 1430 ; Jain & Das 1980 : 20 ; Abraham & Vatsala 1981 : 277; Joseph 1982 : 118 ; Seidenfaden in Matthew 1983 : 1574; Joseph 1987: 160. Coelogyne angutiifolia Wight , Ic.Pl. Ind. Or. 5(1): 5.t. 1641. 1851,non A .Richard 1841. Described by Lindley based on walker's collection from Sri Lanka .This species of characterized by white flowers and a lip which has 3 crenate , apically yellowish keels on the disc. Occurrence :Pathanamthitta , Idukki and Palghat Districts. Distribution : South India (Karnataka , Kerala , Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka.
Described by Rolfe based on a plant received from John S. Moss in June 1890 from Nilgiris . This species is nearly allied to Coelogyne nervosa A.Rich. but different in having entire keels . Occurrence : Idukki and Wayanad Districts. Distribtion : Regional Endemic(Kerala ,Tamil Nadu). 3. Coelogyne nervosa A. Rich., Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot. Or. 5 (1) : 5 .t. 1639. 1851; J.D. Hook . 1890; 835. Richard described this species based on a collection by Perrottet from Nedddoubetta (Naduwattom) in Nilgiris. Lip of this species is characterized by 3 crisped lamellae. Occurrence : Trivandrum , Idukku ,Palghat and Wayanad Districts. s Distribution : Regional Endemic (Kerala , Tamil Nadu). 4. Coelogyne odoratissima Lindl. , Gen . Sp. Orch. 41 . 1430 ; Wight 1851 : 5.t. 1640 ; J.D. Hook . 1890 ; 834; Fischer in Gamble 1928: 1430 ; Sharma & Rathakrishnan 1971; 351; Abraham & Varsala 1981: 277; Jayaweera in Dassanayake & Fosberg 1982 : 116 ; Joseph 1982 : 119& 1987 : 160. Coelogyne angustifolia A. Rich ., Ann. Sc. Nat. Bot. (ser . 2) 15 : 16 . pl. 6. 1841. Lindley described this species based on a collection made by Macrae in 1829 from Nuware Eliya in Sri Lanka . Epiphytic on Rhododendron arboreum , Rapanea wightiana , Syzygium sp.etc. and sometimes on moss clad rocks. Occurrence : Palghat and Wayanad Districts. Distribution : South India (Karnataka , Kerala , Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka . |
