Home > Orchids of Kerala > Eria EriaEria Lindley An Indo-Malesian genus of about 500 species of epiphytic of lithophytic orchids, Eria is represented in India by 55 species and 2 varieties . Twelve species and one variety are found in Kerala . 1. Eria albiflora Rolfe, Bull. Misc. Infom . 170. 1893;Fischer in Gamble 1928: 1425; Joseph 1982 : 111 & 1987: 149. Described by Rolfe based on O'Brien's collection from Nilgiris . Occurrence : Palghat and Wayanad Districts. Distribution : Regional Endemic (Karnataka , Kerala and Tamil Nadu). 2. Eria braccata (Lindl). Lindl. , J. Linn. Soc. Bot. 3: 46 . 1859 ;Trimen 18908: 165. Dendrobium braccatum Lindl., Gen.Sp. Orch. 75. 1830. This species is very much related to Eria reticosa Wight but at once distinguished by the lack of network on the discoid pseudobulb. ] Occurrence : Palghat District. Distribution : Southern India (Kerala) and Sri. Lanka.

Dalzell described this species based on a collection from Maharashtra . Occurrence : Idukki , Palghat and Wayanad Districts. Distribution : Regional Endemic (Maharashtra, Karnataka , Kerala, Tamil Nadu).
Porpax chandrasekharanii Bhargavan & Mohanan, Curr. Sci. 51 (20): 90 . 1982. Eria chandrasekharanii (bhargavan & Mohanan )C. S. Kumar & Manilal, Taxon 35: 720 . 1986. Hooker described this species based on a collection by Jhonson from Travancore . Porpax chandrasekharanii described from Silent Valley , Kerala is in no way different from eria exilis . Occurrence :Travancore , Palghat and Wayanad Districts. Distribution :Regional Endemic (Maharashtra, Karnataka , Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu). 5. Eria microchilos (Dalz.) Lindl. , J. Linn. Soc . Bot. 3 : 47. 1858; Santapau & Kapadia 1966 : 154. Dendrobium microchilos Dalz., Hooker's J. Bot .Kew Gard. Misc. 3: 345. 1851. Originally described by Dalzell based on a collection from Maharashtra . Related to Eria tiagii Manilal et al., but different having a smooth lip . Occurrence : Pathanamthitta , Idukki and Kannur Districts . Distribution : Regional Endemic (Western Ghats). 6. Eria muscicola (Lindl. ) Lindl. var. brevilinguis Joseph & Chandrasekaran , Bull Bot.Surv. Ind. 15 (3-4) : 267 . 1976(1973). Joseph and Chandrasekaran described this variety based on collections from Agastyamalai . It was compared with the Sri Lankan Eria muscicola var. oblonga Trimen but different in having a sessile , ligulate lip with a median callus at base and retuse apex. Occurrence : Trivandrum District. Distribution : Endemic (Kerala and Tamil Nadu.). 7. Eria mysorensis Lindl., J. Linn. Soc. Bot. 3: 54. 1858: J.D. Hook . 1890: 793; Santapau & Kapadia 1966 : 149;Saldanha in saldanha & Nicolson 1976 : 828; Abraham & Vatsala 1981: 380; Joseph 1982 : 113 & 1987: 153. Eria pubescens Wight , Ic. Pl. Ind. Or. 5 (1): 4.t. 1635. 1851, non Lindl. 1825; J.D. Hook . 1890 ; 793; Fischer in Gamble 1928: 1425. Eria polystachya auct. non A. Rich . 1841: Wight 1851: t. 1634. This species is nearly related to Eria polystachya A .Rich . but different in having an oblong subpandurate lip whose disc has 5-7 thickened rugose nerves. Occurrence : Thrivandrum , Idukki , Palghat and Wayanad Districts. Distribution : Regional Endemic (Karnataka , Kerala and Tamil Nadu). 8. Eria nana A. Rich., Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot. Dendrobium filiforme Wight , Ic. Pl. Ind. Or .5(1) : 5 t. 1642. 1852, in part. Eria muscicola (Lindl.) Lindl. var Ponmudiana Mohanan & Henry, J.Econ.Tax. Bot. 8 (2) : 425. 1986, syn.nov. A. Richard described this species based on a collection by Perrottet from 'Condas' (Kundah) in Nilgiris. The new variety ponmudiana described by Mohanan & Henry under Eria muscicola (Lindl) . Lindl. does not differ in any respect from the Nilgiri plant . Accordingly we reduce it under Eria nana A . Rich. Occurrence : Trivandrum and Idukki Districts. Described by Wight based on his collection from Kaitie Falls in Nilgiris . Occurrence : Trivandru , Idukki and Palghat Districts. Distribution : Regional endemic (Kerala and Tamil Nadu). 10. Eria polystachya A.Rich . , Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot.(ser. 2) 15 : 20 .T. 9. 1841; Wight 1851: 4 .t. 1635 (wrongly as Eria pubescens on plate); J.D. Hook. 1890: 792; Fischer in Gamble 1928 : 1428: 1425(excl. syn. Eria . mysorensis); Abraham & Vatsala 1981: 382; Joseph 1982 : 113 ; Seidenfaden in Matthew 1983 : 1577; Joseph 1987: 153. Described by Richard based on Perrottet's collection from 'Nedoubetta' in Nilgiris. This species is related to Eria mysorensis Lindl. but different in having an ovate panduriform lip with a thickened purple ridge . Occurrence : Idukki District. Distribution : Regional Endemic (Kerala and Tamil Nadu [type]).
Described by Blatter based on a collection made from High Wavy Mountains in Tamil Nadu and which produced flowers under cultivation in Bombay in September 1917 . Occurrence : Trivandrum and Idukki Districts. Distribution : Regional endemic (Kerala and Tamil Nadu.)

Eria braccata auct. non Lindl. : Fischer in Gamble 1928: 1425. Described by Wight based on a collection from pycarrah in Nilgiris , this species is closely related to Eria braccata (Lindl.) Lindl. but has a characteristic reticulate sheet on the pseudobulb. Occurrence : Trivandrum , Idukki and Palghat districts. Distribution : National endemic (North West Himalaya, Maharashtra ,Karnataka , Kerala and Tamil Nadu). 13. Eria tiagii Manilal , Sathish & Wood, J. Econ. Tax. Bot. 5 (2): 483 . 1984 . This was described from Silent Valley , Kerala and related to Eria microchilos Lindl. , but different in having a clawed lip with short fleshy hairs underneeth towards distal half . Occurrence : Palghat District. Distribution : Local Endemic (Kerala).
