Seven species are found in Kerala. 1. Peristylus aristatus Lindl., Gen. Sp. Orch. 300. 1835; Fischer in Gamble 1928 : 1474; Seidenfaden 1977: 35 ; Abraham & Vatsala 1981 : 246. Habenaria aristata (Lindl.) J.D. Hook . in Trimen , Cat. Ceylon Pl. 91: 1885 ; 1890 : 158,pro parte. This species was described by Lindley based on Macrae's collection from Sri Lanka . Wight collected it from Pulney Mountains. A very characteristic species with a very peculiar , thin , 3-lobulate transversal ridge at the base of lip. Occurrence : Trivandrum , Pathanamthitta , Idukki and Palghat districts . Distribution : Southern India (kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu ) and Sri Lanka . 2. Peristylus densus (Lindl.) Santapau & Kapadia , Journ . Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc. 57: 128 . 1960 ; Rathakrishnan 1971: 5; Seidenfaden 1977: 32 ; Abraham & Vatsala 1981: 243. Coeloglossum densum Lindl., Gen. Sp. This species was originally described by Lindley based on Wallich's collection from Sylhet in Bangladesh. Occurrence : Trivandrum , Idukki Districts. Distribution : India , Bangladesh to Burma , Thailand , Cambodia , Vietnam and China . 3. Peristylus goodyeroides (D. Don) Lindl. , Gen . Sp. Orch. 229. 1835; Fischer in Gamble 1928: 1475; Santapau & Kapadia 1966 : 52 ; Rao 1966 : 225 ; Kammathy et al. 1967 : 230 ' Seidenfaden 1977: 53 ; Abraham & Vatsala 1981 : 249 ; Joseph 1982 : 71 & 1987: 97 . Habenaria goodyeroides D. Don , Prodr. Fl. Nepal . 25 . 1825 ; J.D. Hook . 1890 : 161 (excl. syn . H. grandis ). This was originally described based on Wallich's collection from Nepal . Occurrence : Trivandrum , Quilon , Idukki , Palghat and Kannur Districts . Distribution : Indo -Malesia . 4. Peristylus lawii Wight , Ic. Pl . Ind. Or. 5 (1) : 12 .t. 1695 . 1851 ; Santapau & Kapadia 1966 : 53 : Abraham & Vatsala 1981 : 249 : Joseph 1982 : 73 & 1987 : 101 . Habenaria lawii (Wight) J. D. Hook ., Fl. Brit. Ind. 6: 162 . 1890. Described by Wight based on Law's collection from Concan and Mysore , Peristylus lawii is related to Peristylus stockii (J.D. Hook.) Kraenzl. but can be distinguished by the mostly clustered leaves and lip with a globose spur. Occurrence : Trivendrum , Wayanad Districts. Distribution : National Endemic (From Western Ghats to Bihar). 5. Peristylus plantagineus Lindl., Gen.sp. Orch. 300. 1835; Wight 1851 : t. 921 ; Fischer in Gamble 1928 : 1475 ; Santapau& Kapadia 1966: 51. Habenaria wightii Trimen, Cat. Ceylon pl. 91 . 1885 ; J.D. Hook . 1890 : 162 . Lindley described this species based on Macrae's collection from Sri Lanka . Occurrence : Travancore , Malabar ; Wayanad District . Distribution : India and Sri Lanka .
Habenaria bicornuta J.D. Hook ., Fl. Brit . Ind. 6: 156 . 1890 . Wight described this species based on collections from 'Neilgherries;. The characetristic raised sidelobes of the lip remind the head of an antelope . It was named in honour of A . Richard who described many orchids from Nilgiris . Occurrence : Idukki District. Distribution : South India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu) and Nepal .
