Phaius Loureiro

A palaeotropic genus of about 50 species of mostly terrestrial orchids, Phaius is represented in India by five species . Only one species has been recorded from Kerala .

1. Phaius luridus Thw., Enum . Pl. Zeyl. 300. 1861 ; J.D. Hook. 1890: 817 ; Trimen 1898: 173 ; Joseph 1977(1974) : 147 ; Abraham & Vatsala 1981 : 260 ; Jayaweera in Dassnayake & Fosberg 1982 : 156.

Thwaites described this species based on his collection from Saffragam District in Ceylon . For over a century this was the only collection till it was rediscovered from Kerala by Joseph

Occurrence : Trivandrum District.

Distribution : South India (Kerala) and Sri Lanka .
