Seidenfia Szlachetko

An Indo-Sri Lankan genus of 9 species (one species occurs in seychelles islands) , Seidenfia is represented in India by six species , all of which are available in Kerala .

This is unique species , the presence of a horn like appendage at the base of the dorsal surface of the column is very characteristic . Hence , Margonska & Szlachetko put this species in a monotypic section of its own called Crenulatae.

Occurrence : Idukki District.

Distribution : Regional Endemic (Kerala , Tamil Nadu[type]).

This species was originally described by A . Richard based on a collection by Perrottet from Nilgiris .

Occurrence : Idukki District.

Distribution : Southern India (Karnataka ,Kerala , Tamil Nadu) and Sri . Lanka .

This species was originally described from Nilgiris . It is characterized by broad lip with finely lacinate lip .

Occurrence : Wayanad District.

Distribution : Regional Endemic (Karnataka , Kerala , Tamil Nadu).

4. Seidenfaia malabarica Marg. & Szlach., Pol .Bot. Journ. 46(1) : 59. 2001.

This is a newly described species allied to Seidenfia versicolor (Lindl) Marg.& Szlach ., Pol. Bot. Journ. 46(1) : 59 . 2001.

This is a newly described species allied to Seidenfia versicolor (Lindl.) Marg . & Szlach . and Seidenfia rheedii (Sw.) Szlach. but the leaves are ovate-lanceolate , lip triangular , 9denate on apical margin, teeth wide, broadly triangular , the median tooth being the largest.

Occurrence : Malabar.

Distribution : Regional Endemic (Karnataka , Kerala , Tamil Nadu).

This was first described and illustrated from Kerala by Van Rheede as Basaala Poulou Maravara , the basis for establishment of the genus Malaxis by Swartz.

Occurrence : Trivandrum , Kottayam , Idukki , Thrisur , palghat < Wayanad and Kannur Districts. Distribution : India and Sri Lanka .

Till recently this was merged under Seidenfia rheedii from which it differs in having midtooth shorter than the nearest teeth .
