Home > Orchids of Kerala > Seidenfia SeidenfiaSeidenfia Szlachetko An Indo-Sri Lankan genus of 9 species (one species occurs in seychelles islands) , Seidenfia is represented in India by six species , all of which are available in Kerala . 1. This is unique species , the presence of a horn like appendage at the base of the dorsal surface of the column is very characteristic . Hence , Margonska & Szlachetko put this species in a monotypic section of its own called Crenulatae. Occurrence : Idukki District. Distribution : Regional Endemic (Kerala , Tamil Nadu[type]). 2. This is a newly described species allied to Seidenfia versicolor (Lindl) Marg.& Szlach ., Pol. Bot. Journ. 46(1) : 59 . 2001. This is a newly described species allied to Seidenfia versicolor (Lindl.) Marg . & Szlach . and Seidenfia rheedii (Sw.) Szlach. but the leaves are ovate-lanceolate , lip triangular , 9denate on apical margin, teeth wide, broadly triangular , the median tooth being the largest. Occurrence : Malabar. This was first described and illustrated from Kerala by Van Rheede as Basaala Poulou Maravara , the basis for establishment of the genus Malaxis by Swartz. Occurrence : Trivandrum , Kottayam , Idukki , Thrisur , palghat < Wayanad and Kannur Districts. Distribution : India and Sri Lanka . 6. Seidenfia versicolor (lindl) Marg. & Szlach., Pol. Bot.
