Six species are found in Kerala. 1. Zeuxine affinis (Lindl) Benth . ex J.D. Hook., Fl. Brit. Ind. 6 : 108 . 1890; 1894: 2177; Seidenfaden 1978: 88; Sasidharan , Rajesh & Augustine 1999: 159 . Monochilus affinis Lindl. , Gen . Sp. Orch. 487. 1840, pro parte . This was recently reported from Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary as a new recorded for peninsular India . Occurrence : Quilon District. Distribution : India , Bhutan , Burma , Thailand , Laos and Malaysia . 2. Zeuxine flava (Wall.ex. Lindl.) Benth.ex. J.D. Hook ., Fl. Brit. Ind. 6: 108. 1890 & 1894 : T. 2176 (p.p .? ); Seidenfaden 1978: 84. Monochilus flavum Wall. ex. Lindl., Gen.Sp. Orch. 487.1840. Zeuxine clandestina auct. non. Bl. : Rao 1988: 95. This was described based on Wallich's collection from Nepal. Rao's record of Zeuxine clandestina Bl. is erroneous . His material (Vajravelu 59101, MH1) belongs here . Occurrence : Trivandrum , Idukki , Palghat and Wayanad Districts. Distribution : India ,Nepal , Bhutal , Burma and Thailand . 3. Zeuxine gracilis (Breda) bl. , Coll. Orch. Ind. Arch. 69 . T. 18 . Occurrence : Trivandrum District. Distribution : Indo-Malesia . 4. Zeuxine longilabris (Lindl.) Benth. ex. J.D. Hook ., Fl. Brit. Ind. 6: 107 . 1890; Fischer in Gamble 1928 : 1456; Seidenfaden 1978; 91; Abraham & Vatsala 1981: 202. Monochilus longilabre Lindl. , Gen. Sp. Orch. 487. 1840. M. affine Wight , Ic. Pl. Ind. Or.5 (1) : 16 .t. 1728. 1851, non Lindl. 1840. Described originally by Lindley based on Macrae's collection from Sri Lanka , Z. longilabris is characterized by more or less coarsely denate lobules of lip and one gland in each side of the sac. Occurrence : Trivandrum , Idukki , Palghat and Wayanad Districts. Distribution : India to Thailand . 5. Zeuxine strateumatica (l.) Schltr., Bot. Zeuxine roubusta Wight , ibid .t. 1726. 1851. Linnaeus based his description on Herman's collection from Sri Lanka . Occurrence : Malappuram and Palghat Districts . Distribution : Widespread from Afghanistan to New Guinea . This was collected by Theuerkauf , Wayanad . Ormerod who studied the sketch says it a new species Zeuxine sp. nov. a. a single flower, b. side view of flower showing column and petals, c. lip showing the characteristic callus at base. Occurrence : Wayanad District . Distribution : Local Endemic. |
