The first ritual of the Aacharya is to sit at the Nirthi(south-west) direction and propitiate Lord Ganapathi (Vigneswara) by pooja for His blessing to complete the work without the obstacle. The implement like chopper, axe, spade, stone-cutters, chisels, carpenters tools etc. are also subjected to pooja. Afterwards the holy ground is marked out (paragraph 2.7) and bali(offering) with haviss* (sacrificial food or rice or grains) is offering in all the eight directions. The Aachaarya then starts the removal of the trees and bushed himself and that too by chanting asthra-manthras. The importance given to this rituals is very significant as it seeks the permission of the flora to removed, indicating the great reverence to nature in ancient times. After this rits the leveling of the ground is taken up. * Here haviss is a mixture of sesame, rice, black gram, sugar, honey and ghee.
