Koovalam

It is a sacred tree and its leaves are trifoliate in shape and are used for worship of Siva. Koovalam can be planted either on the western or southern side of a house. Devi puraana states of dire consequences for those who cut down this sacred tree. Similarly if koovalam tree is not properly maintained and also if it falls away it is considered inauspicious. Vilva leaf is used in temples dedicated to Siva and is prohibited for pooja to Vishnu.
