Home > Temples of Kerala > Kazhakakkars KazhakakkarsDepending on the importance of the temple the number of kazhakakkars varies. It is very significant to ensure that the vaadyakkars (those who play musical and percussion instruments) play the instruments properly as per saastras. Of late there is deterioration (lopa) in every respect, particularly in playing paani, itayka and other drums, kurumkuzhal, naagaswaram etc and also in the singing of sopaaaa sangeetha, which are very significant in keeping up the importance of rites. In the use of flowers also there are restrictions, but either due to ignorance or due to ignorance they are rarely followed by the garland makers and the priests. The flowers generally used in temples are not indicated in any of the manuals of the statutory bodies. It is essential to have nandavanam.(garden of flowering plants) for use in temples. For this the services of the watch and ward staff of temples can be utilised besides obtaining free services from the devotees. The Travancore Devaswom Board has recently launched a Devaranya project for utilising vacant temple lands for cultivating flowering plants and other essential trees used like teak, jack etc. It is also essential that requisite kazhakakkars are appointed in each temple considering the work load and also for meeting emergency requirements due to availing of leave by the staff and also for conducting special rites due to pollution etc. Their problems and difficulties are often overlooked.
