Mel-saanthi

Mel-saanthi is responsible for the conduct of daily poojas (nithya-nidaana) apart from helping the Thanthri if required, in special rites. Therefore, he should have thorough knowledge on the various aspects of the pooja system like daily poojas, navakam, pancha-gavya, abhisheka-manthras and procedure for Sree-bali for each deity besides having preliminary knowledge about the personal purificatory observances of priest described in the earlier chapter like deha-suddhi, sankha-poorana, praanayaama etc. He should also be quite familiar with the mudras to be shown at various occasions of pooja which can be done only with practice. Another quality which the Mel-saanthi must posess is the knowledge about the intricacies of suddhi and aSuddhi (pollution) which have been briefly narrated in the earlier chapter. Further he has to lead a ritualistic life as the vitality of the deity is related to his knowledge, sincerity and dedication. The duties of Mel-saanthi can be summarized as shown below.

  1. Ensuring cleanliness and sanctity of the garbha-graha besides observing personal cleanliness, wearing of ritualistic dress etc;
  2. Performing pooja as per vedic or thaanthric system according to the custom (pathiv) of the temple, with full knowledge of the sankalpa of the deity installed there. The details of sankalpa of the deity and details of pooja fixed at the time of prathishta (installation) or punna-prathishta (reinstallation) are to be obtained from the Thanthri or in his absence from the Ooraalar or by conducting Deva-prasna
  3. Conducting pooja at specified timings as per the pathiv fixed at the time of prathishta of the idol; These timings should not be changed for the convenience of anyone.
  4. Keeping under safe custody all ornaments, utensils etc meant for daily use;
  5. Assisting Thanthri in all special and expiatory rites.
  6. Training a qualified and trust-worthy keezh-saanthi for any emergency in case he has to keep away from the temple due to pollution, as a result of death in the family or due to any other unforeseen circumstances like sickness, marriage etc;
  7. Reporting to the authorities of any damage to the idol, peetham, shadaadhaara, leak in the roof or any other asuddhi for immediate rectification and for conducting purificatory rites.

Though the above are the general guidelines, in each temple the duties vary depending on the status of the temple, number of employees etc apart from the requirements for special and expiatory rites. In ritualistic matters his responsibility and status are more than that of the Manager or Executive officer of the temple.
