Pillars and Columns

Pillars stand on prathi, the top moulding of the adhishtaana. Their number varies from 12 to 20 depending on the size of the sreekovil. In case of 12 pillars four are at corners and two each on each side and the space in between the pillars is equal. Pillars are erected depending on the type of sreekovil particularly based on elevation and structure. In some cases the pillars in the inner circumambulatory space of the sreekovil have different shapes and different types of . ornamentation. The common shapes are square, hexagonal, octagonal, sixteen-faced and circular. In some cases a single pillar has a combination of any of the above shapes. Further the pillars are excellent pieces of art and has oma, ghata, mandi, veerakantha, and pothikaa. The salient features64 of each of the above five segments are given below. The measure used for making pillar is kaal-dand, which is equal to the breadth of the top of the pillar.

Oma It is the pedestal (peetha) of the pillar. It corresponds to the shape of the pillar. Eg: the pillar is square then the oma is also square. Its breadth is 2 dands and height one-fourth of a dand
Ghata Ghata means kumbha or kalasa. This part is above oma and resembles a pot and its breadth is 2 dand and equal to 1 ¼, 1 ½ or 1 ¾ dands
Mandi It is square in shape. (Its breadth is 4 dands and thickness 3/4 of a dand and is above ghata)
Veerakantha It is below pothikaa and above mardi, and square in shape
Pothikaa It is a corbel-bracket of a column and is 3, 4 or 5 ½ dands in length and breadth equal to the base of the column. . Its height ,is half the breadth. Pothikaas are of three kinds. The first type is known as chithra-pothikaa, as it is decorated with figures of demons, crocodiles,¬fabulous animals (like vyaala), foliages, rows of gems etc. The second type is pathra-pothikaa with patterns of leaves and creepers while third type is tharangini with tharangas or wave-like ornaments which terminate by a number of undulating lines.

The utthara (beam) rests on the pillars and takes the whole load of rafters and the roof.
