Home > Temples of Kerala > Characteristics of Vigrahas Characteristics of VigrahasEach vigraha has some common as well as particular characteristics.The principal deities mentioned in Thanthra Samucchaya are Ganpathi, Siva, Vishu, Sankaranarayana, Durga, Subramanya and Saastha. The Sesha Samucchaya which was composed later covered some other deities like Brahma, Soorya, Vysravana, Gos'alakrishna, Saraswathi, Sree Bhagavathi, Sree Parvathi, Jaishta Bhagavathi, Bhadrakaap, Saptha-Maath[kkal, Kshethrapaalan, Bhairava-Sivan, Indra etc. Naaga worship is also equally important in Kerala though not specified in these texts. Thus the most important deities found throughout Kerala are Ganapathi, Siva, Vishnu, Devi (in different forms inclusive of Bhadrakaali, Chaamudi etc.), Subramanya and Saastha besides Naaga. Brief accounts on the salient characteristics of idols of these deities are as follows.
