Home > Temples of Kerala > Mud Images Mud ImagesMud images are very few. Of these the most important one is the Sree Mahathara Mahalingeswara temple, Adoor (Kasaragod taluk) which is a 3 feet high mud-idol of Siva-linga believed to have been made by Arjuna. This idol is now covered with copper sheets. Similarly the main prathishtas of Parvathi Parameswara temple Pinarayi (Thalassery taluk) and the Mariamman (Bhadra) temple (Vythiri taluk) have prathishtas made of mud. In this context it is worth-mentioning that there are some prathishtas made up of laterite stone either Siva-linga or other wise. Mud is also used as one of the ingredients in making idols. It is believed that the famous idol of Sree Vallabha of Thiruvalla (Pathagamthitta district) is made of Anjanakall, mud, darbha and a peculiar resin. Therefore after abhisheka the vigraha is not wiped but the lustral water is only sponged gently with a thorth (a type of local hand-loom towel).
