At the closing years of 8th century it is believed that some temples which existed were dedicated to Siva, Durga and Vishnu. The cave temples of Kerala belong to 8th century AD,if not earlier. They include Vizhinjam and Madavoorppara (near Chengottukonam) in Thiruvananthapuram taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kottukkal (near Aayur) in Kottarakkara taluk of Kollam district, Thrikkakuti near Kaviyoor in Thiruvalla taluk of Pathanamthitta district, Kallil near Perumbavoor in Kunnathunad taluk of Ernakulam district, Thrikkur in Thrissur taluk and Irunilakkode (near Mulloorkkara) in Thalappilly taluk of Thrissur district, Bhranthankaavu (Bhranthanpaara) at Thiruvegappura (near Pattambi) in Ottappalam taluk of Palakkad district and Kunnathurpadi (near Payyavoor) in Taliparamba taluk of Kannur district. << back
