The deity (Shakthi) is one of the most revered Bhagavathi (goddess) of the people of Parasala; known by the name Bhuvaneswari. This temple is of medium size; idol made of sandstone; Shree-kovil is square shaped and roofed with cement concrete. In Hindu temples there is a custom of placing other gods by the side of the main idol; here Ganapathi is seated on the south-eastern side (kanni-moola) and Murukan (Subramanyan) is seated in the north-western (Vayu-kon) side. Naga-raja and Naga-yakshi (snake-gods) are behind the temple. It is said Murunkara was originally known as Murukan-kara (hence the place name) and Murukan was the main deity; later as per some astrological predictions Bhagavathi had to be promoted to the main seat. Sunday, Tuesday and Friday are the days of special celebrations and large crowds can be seen on those days. Pooja are held two times a day. Temple festival is held on the last Tuesday of Kumbha Month as per the Malayalam calendar. Even years before the temple entry proclamation; this temple allowed the entry of all people without consideration of their class or caste. It is also believed that those who steal temple property have to meet the wrath of the deity and there are many instances of thieves getting punished for that crime.
