Home > Kerala Temples > Musical Instruments > Chengala ChengalaChengalaChengala, an important type of gong, is made of vellode, the best bell metal alloy, containing 2 1/2 to 3 parts of tin, 10 parts of copper besides velutheeyam. It is round in shape with a diameter of 24 angulams with a thickness of 1/4 angulam at the centre. It has two holes at one end for tying a string. Chengala is used as rhythmical instrument for all important rites associated with consecration besides for navakam, dhaara, sree-bali, sree-bhootha-bali and uthsava-bali. Chengala is an important accompanied instrument while singing Kathhakali songs.
