It consists of three parts the lower part of 19 inches, the centre or natu-muri with 19 1/2 inches and the top part (kaala-vaay-muri) having 20 inches. Thus it has a length of 58 1/2 inches. The bottom end has the shape of jasmine-bud while the top portion is horn-shaped. The inner-diameter at the beginnings of each part of the pipe are. as follows: 1/4 inch at the mouth-part, 3/4 inch for natu-muri and one inch for mel-muri and at the beginning of horn it is 1 1/4 inches. The maximum diameter of the horn is 2 1/2 inches. The casting of these three parts is done separately and with great care. The quality of the material and size determine the sound produced. A string is tied connecting bottom to the top for strength. The purpose of playing komb is not for music but to set rhythm. It is therefore used in pancha-vaadya, panchaari me!a, paanti-mela and kombu-paattu.
