The horn which is fixed at its end has 7 1/2 inches length and 7 inches diameter at its widest part. As in the case of kurumkuzhal, seevali grass is used for producing required svaras. Naagaswaram has 12 holes. Eleven on the upper part of the pipe in a line and one at the lower side towards the base. It is made with great care and the best quality is made at Narasimha pettah village of Thanchavoor district of Tamil Nadu. Though naagaswaram is an important musical instrument it is not a ritualistic item used within naalambalam as per the thaanthric traditions of Kerala. Its place is either at the agra-mantapa or outside it. It is however, played as an important accompaniment (outside naalambalam) in Sree-bali, sree-bhootha-bali, pallivetta, aaraat etc. The other accompaniments to naagasvara are sruthi, thamburu, thavil and kuzhitthalam. The most common rendering of naagasvaram at the time of ritualistic rites is known as mallari in naatta-raaga and is exclusively done in this instrument.
