Of these the former is very rare and not used for routine temple rites but itam-piri sankh is used for all pooja-rites. Itam-piri sankh of large sizes are used for producing the mystic spell 'OM' by blowing it. The rhythm of sounding the conch is gradual from low pitch to a high pitch by taking full breath and tends to end slowly to solemn silence. It is essential that the blowing of conch is done without broken breath as broken sounds, it is considered, are inauspicious and result in maladies to all concerned. Sankh is blown at different occasions i.e., opening of sreekovil, at the time of commencement and closure of sree-bali, at different occasions for sree-bhootha-bali, uthsava-bali, rites, kalasas etc. It is also used as an ensemble of pancha-vaadyam. It is worthy to note that the sound which emanates from the conch reverberates the whole atmosphere and kindles devotional spirit in the minds of devotees.
