Suddha maddalam is made in jackwood, the length of the tun being of different sizes ie 23 1/4, 22 1/2 or 21 1/2 angulams. The diameter of sides are different valam-thala being 7 1/4 angulams and itam-thala 6 1/4 angulams. Unlike other instruments the leather used is that of buffalo. Though used for performing arts, rather than for rituals, it has no place within the naalambalam. However it creates a musical rhythm of high order.
