Home > Kerala Temples > Musical Instruments > Veekkan VeekkanVeekkanVeekkan is an inevitable percussion instrument used for divine rites, particularly for sree-bali, sree-bhootha-bali, uthsava-bali, parisha-vaadya, kriya-vaadya, pancha-vaadya, and during offerings like dhaaras, kalasas etc. Its shape is round but shorter in size than chenta. The making of this instrument is similar to that of the drums mentioned above. Heart-wood or jackwood is used for the tun, cow's leather for sides besides making six holes on the valayam of each side. However the tensions of the strings and leather are so fIxed that the instrument produces the sound of dheem, which is considered close to the mystic spell. As it sets the time-rule for rhythm it has earned the name of 'Father Drum' or acchan-chenta.
