It is conducted either in the kootthambalam, valiambalamor precincts o~the temple. Those who perform kootth, are generally well-versed in Sanskrit and Malayalam. Being a man of genius and a great orator he can enchant and enchain his audience through his discourse by his art of humour and sarcasm. His mode of presenting puraanic stories is unique as he draws parallels from contemporary life to stress the importance of moral life. He has a charming manner of pointing out foibles and the audience hears him with rapt attention. The delivery is extempore, and a good artist can recite easily over ten thousand Sanskrit slokas. The theme of his discourse generally contains scenes from Ramayana, and Mahabhaaratha such as birth of Rama, his marriage to Janaka's daughter (Seetha), Hanuman's visit to Seetha, the burning of Lanka, Paanchaali swayamvaram, Subadraharanam, Rajasooyam, Krishna's mission from Paandavas to Duryodhana for the partition of the kingdom etc. Chakkiar wears a crimson cloth turban with its gold rim and silk embossments in the centre. Nangiar has a.simple neat white dress and a pretty knot of hair in front and she sounds the cymbals.
