Generally the male artists are Chakkiars and female artists Nangiars; the latter also help in reciting Sanskrit verses and in sounding kuzhitthaalam (cymbals). Nambiar is the drumner of mizhaav. Another actor of kootiyaattam is the Vidushaka (clown), whose role is to translate the Sanskrit verses into Malayalam. The themes of kootiyaattam are taken from Sanskrit plays of Bhasa, Kalidasa, Sakthibhadra, Sree Harsha, Bhodayana, Kulasekhara Varma, Neelakanta et al. The mode of acting is based on the guidelines given in Tholan's works like Attaprakarams and Kramadeepika. In kootiyaattam, similar to Chaakkiar-kootth, the artists take the exclusive privilege to make fun of the audience including important personages without any kind of inhibitions and every one has to take such sarcastic comments in sportive spirit.
