Home > Temples of Kerala > Pillars and Columns Pillars and ColumnsPillars stand on prathi, the top moulding of the adhishtaana. Their number varies from 12 to 20 depending on the size of the sreekovil. In case of 12 pillars four are at corners and two each on each side and the space in between the pillars is equal. Pillars are erected depending on the type of sreekovil particularly based on elevation and structure. In some cases the pillars in the inner circumambulatory space of the sreekovil have different shapes and different types of . ornamentation. The common shapes are square, hexagonal, octagonal, sixteen-faced and circular. In some cases a single pillar has a combination of any of the above shapes. Further the pillars are excellent pieces of art and has oma, ghata, mandi, veerakantha, and pothikaa. The salient features64 of each of the above five segments are given below. The measure used for making pillar is kaal-dand, which is equal to the breadth of the top of the pillar.
The utthara (beam) rests on the pillars and takes the whole load of rafters and the roof.
