Thaayambaka Ritualistic Art in Kerala Temples

The exact period of origin of thaayambaka is not known. It is seen during festival days in temples, particularly when the deity is taken out in procession, thaayambaka is an essential part. Only chentas (both itam-thala and valam-thala) and ilatthaalams are used. The artists use one kole (stick) and palm for drumming. Generally for a small set it is essential to have 5 chentas and 2 ilatthaalams. This can be increased, maintaining the same proportion. This ritualistic art is seen in all temples during festival days. Experienced persons can produce exhilarating experience in the audience.
