Home > Temples of Kerala > Aayilyam AayilyamAayilyam, the ninth asterisk falling in the months of Kanni, Thulam and Kumbham are important in temples dedicated to Naaga. In Vettikkottu (near Kayamkulam) Anantha is the principal deity and the festival is celebrated in the month of Kanni iwhile in Mannarassala (near Harippad) and at Pampumekkattu (near Mala) where the deity is Vaasuki, the Aayilliam in Thulam is taken as the festival day. In Aamooa Naaga temple (near Udayamperoor) the important festival day is the Aayilya asterisk in the month of Meenam while the most auspicious day at the Naagambozhi temple (near Udayagapuram, Vaikom) is the Aayilyam asterisk in the month of Kumbham. In all temples where naaga-prathishtas have been done the Aayilyam asterisk in all months are observed, particularly in the month of Kannii, Thulam Kumbham. The rites on the festival day include Ganapathi-homam followed by regular poojas and kalasaabhisheka and offering of noorum-paalum (a liquid of rice-flour and milk and fresh efflorescence of areca-tree) to Naaga Raaja, Naaga-Yakshi, Sarpa-Yakshi, or Naaga-Kannyaka et al.
