Home > Temples of Kerala > Temple rites Agni JananaThe rite of agni-janana, conducted in the forenoon of the fifth day, is the kindling of agni or fire in the homa-kunda (altar) made nearer to the head (Sira) position of the sayya (bed) to be made for the deity. The basic principle of agni-janana is to facilitate the process of birth of the deity. Here agni represents the beeja (sperm of the Parama-Purusha) while the homa-kunda represents the womb of the Prakrithi. The birth of the deity takes place here. It is to be remembered that all samskaaras are done one after the other in this agnikunda which include pumsavana, seemantha, jaathakarma-naamakarana,upanishakramana annaprasana, chowla, upanaya etc. For Siva all the shodasa-kriyas are done while for Durga upto chowla, for Bhadrakaali upto anna-praasana for Devas upto upanayana (excluding upanishakramana), with all separate aajya-hoothi manthras.
