Asuddhi and Nimitthams

The expiatory rite (praayaschittham) varies according to the structural aspects of the temple. For example, if the naalambalam is paved with granite slabs it is difficult to conduct the expiatory rite of khananaadi - Suddhi (khananam or digging), haranam (removal of soil), dahanam (burning with fire), pooranam (filling with new soill) go-nivaasanam (stalling of cows and feeding them), vipra-ucchishtam (feeding Brahmins seated on the affected ground) and spreading of pancha-gavyam inside garbha-grha. It may be impossible to take the cow within the garbha-grha on account of the peculiar structure of the temple. In such cases the Thanthri has the liberty to modify the expiatory rite to the extent possible, by either changing the procedure or adding some rites. The intention is always to increase the power of the idol. The circumstances of asuddhi (pollution) and indication of nimitthams (omens/events) along with the prescribed expiatory rite ( as given in patala 10 of Thanthra-samucchaya or Kuzhikkatt paccha) are given below. The various rites mentioned in the succeeding statement are explained in detail under prathishta-rites (ie, praasaada-suddhi including Vaasthu-bali, bimba-Suddhi, saanthi-homa, dravya-kalasa etc.)

There may be slight variations in the determination of expiatory rites and their execution between one Thanthri and the other. The thanthri has a final say, provided he is pious and meticulous in doing rites in the temple. However, the above description will give a broad outline on the importance given to expiatory rites in relation to the power of the deity. The role of Daivanja and Deva-prasana which have been described at the beginning of the chapter have very great relevance in deciding the praayaschittha, especially if it is a grave one.
