Home > Temples of Kerala > Temple rites Bimba-sodhana-and-bimba-suddhiOn the afternoon of the fifth day the rites commence with jaloddhaara (retrieving the bimba from the tank) and taking the same to the Snana-mandapa. Prior to that the cloth of the bimba is removed and the bimba is subjected to cleansing with darbha-mushli, kshaalana (washing) and plavana (flooding) snana (bathing) and fmally adorning with flowers. Sandal paste is then applied and pooja done with praanayaama and different manthras. In case of Vishnu and Bhadrakaali kauthuka-bandhana is done along with udhvaasa of theerthha138. Then the bimba, clad in fresh clothes, adorned with flowers and applied with sandal paste, is then taken in procession with musical instruments and placed facing the Garbha-grha on the snana-peetha. The actual rites of bimba-suddhi then commence. The materials are different , eg: ghee, honey and katalakka powder for Siva; ghee and honey and vaaka powder for Saastha and ghee and katalakka powder for other deities. Then plavana and snana are done with pure water followed by abhisheka of bimba with suddhi-kalasas consisting of various materials specified in thaanthric texts for each deity. (Refer patala 14 of Kuzhikkattpaccha). Then ghee and honey are purified before they are used for the auspicious ceremony of nethra-un.meelanam (opening of eyes of the bimba).
