Home > Temples of Kerala > Temple rites Bimba-sodhanaBimba-sodhana (cleaning the idol) is done systematically and it is different for each deity. For Vishnu the bimba is washed with pure water, rubbed with darbha grass, skimmed with cow's tail, abhisheka done with ghee, rubbed with the powder of Katalakka and washed again with pure water. In respect of Siva-linga the bimba is bathed with ghee and honey, rubbed with nice powdered barks of ilippa (Bassia longifolia), plaasu (bastard teak), vaaka (kokko), plaavu (jack tree), mango, arayaal (sacred fig), atthi (country fig) and peraal (banyan tree) followed again by rubbing with the ashes of these barks and specified muds (used for bimba-suddhi-kalasa). Then again bimba is bathed with gandha water. The ingredients of bimba-sodhana are different for each deity (Sankaranarayana, Durga, Ganapathi, Saastha etc).
