The day is observed to ward off obstacles in day-to-day-life. Chathurtthi days in the months of Chingam, Kanni, Makaram, Meeaam and Metam are observed of which the day in Chingam in Kerala is known as Vinayaka Chathurthhi, the birthday of Lord Ganesa. It is believed that the observance of vratha on Chathurthhi thithhi in the month of Kanni will take the person to the abode of Lord Siva, while the one in Makaram gives a person welfare and fulfilment of all desires. On Meena-chathurthhi the devotee has to observe vratha on the night also. Those who take vratha on the Chathurthhi day in the month of Metam by offering flowers of damanaka to the deity will be bestowed with all pleasures. Further details on Vinayaka-Chathurthhi are given under aatta-viseshas.
