Home > Temples of Kerala > Dravya-kalasa and Ashtabandhakalasa Dravya-kalasa and AshtabandhakalasaDravya-kalasa is essentially done to finally remove the asuddhi (pollution) incidental to renovation or repairs to praakaaras. The mode of conducting dravya-kalasa has already been explained (paragraph 5.90). Normally this is done in three days after suddhi, punyaaham etc. Ashtabandha-kalasa is required only when ashtabandha has to be applied to the idol ie on three occasions viz (i) at the time of prathishta (ii) when the idol has a shake and to be refixed as the life of the previous ashtabandha is over and when puna-prathishta (replacing the idol by a new one) has to be done. In all these occasions ashtabandha has to be prepared as described earlier (paragraph 5.74 and the foot note 142) under the direct supervision of the Ooraalar or Thanthri for maintaining the quality of ashta-bandha. The rites vary according to each occasion like re-fIxing the idol, changing the idol etc. For refixing the same idol the rites are chathu-suddhi, prathishta-homa, adhivaasa-homa, saanthi-homa etc. While in respect of changing of the idol bimba-suddhi, jalaadhivaasa etc, which are required to be done for a new bimba have to be performed apart from rituals like anujna, dravya-kalasa etc and samskaara of the earlier idol.
