Home > Temples of Kerala > Temple rites Kalasa-pooja and usha-poojaAfter opening the shrine the next rite is abhyanga-kalasa pooja (pooja of a kalasa containing gingelly oil) followed by abhisheka. It is to be noted that the gingelly oil is subjected to purificatory rites and then applied to all parts of the vigraha. Then the vigraha (of stone or metal) is properly cleaned, with vaaka-powder followed by abhisheka with different materials like pure water, tender coconut water, pancha-gavya, panchaamrtha, rose water and finally pure water. Then the usha pooja is done with nivedya etc. The beating of marappaani is an essential item during this auspicious occasion. Then it is followed by usha-pooja. (For katu-sarkkara, stucco or mud images the procedure is slightly different as cleaning/ abhisheka cannot be done).
