Home > Temples of Kerala > Kumbha Bharani and Meena Bharani Kumbha Bharani and Meena BharaniBoth these days are auspicious in Devi temples, particularly in Bhadrakaali temples like Kodungallur (in Thrissur district), Chettikulangara (near Mavelikkara) and Saarkkara (near Chirayinkizh). The celebrations at Kodungallur start on the Kumbha-Bharani day and end on the Meena-Bharani, while that of Saarkkara temple starts on Meena-Bharani and end; on the next day. The Chettikulangara Bhagavathi is worshipped as the daughter of Kodungallur Bhagavathi and the Bharani festival is conducted in Kumbham. It is believed that the Devi proceeds to Kodungallur, to attend the Meena-Bharani festival at Her mother's place and therefore the temple at Chettiku~angara is closed on the Meena-Bharani day. Peculiar are the relationships between these temples and over centuries people are worshipping these deities with great reverence and without any deviation in rituals associated with them. There are many Bhadrakaali temples in the State where these two days are observed as festival days, particularly those situated in the coastal belt of Kerala.
