The Makara-vilakk festival is conducted on the last day of Dhanu, which synchronizes with the day of Samkramam ie rising of the Sun from dakshinayana to uttharaayana. The next day ie, first day of Makaram is also celebrated as an auspicious day in all temples, particularly throughout South India as Thai-pongal.
