Naveekarana-kalasa (rite associated with renovation) is done under the following occasions.
When the sreekovil is renovated for which the vigraha has to be removed
to a baalaalaya (temporary abode of the deity)
When the existing vigraha has to be replaced by a new one due to some serious defect in the existing idol. (In this context it is to be bom in mind that changing of vigraha has to be done in very exceptional cases like the breakage of head and in occasions when it cannot be repaired. (ie, similar to a situation where man succumbs to injuries.) As far as possible the vigraha has to be repaired with the concurrence of the Thanthri and the astrologer through ashta-mangala prasna).
When the renovation of praakaaras is completed a naveekarana-kalasa has essentially to be conducted.
It is absolutely necessary to have a Deva-prasna before any type of renovation, change of idol etc as it is the only way to ascertain the views of the deity, particularly in the context that the present-day administrators are quite unaware of the sankalpa in which the idol was installed earlier. Along with naveekarana- kalasa expiatory rites have to be conducted which are discussed separately. As per saasthras the rites of naveekarana-kalasa have to be done either for nine days or for eleven days, of which the former is common. Eleven-day rites may be necessary in exceptional cases when change of dwaja, parivaara-prathishta etc are required. The details of rituals on these two different categories of rites are as follows.

The above list of rites gives the importance and significance of transferring of chaithanya to kalasa and back in case of principal deity, and replacing of dwaja and fresh installation of parivaara, maathru and valia- balikkall. In this context it is necessary
to point out that a rite known as jeevodwaasa of dwaja or valia-balikall is done whenever
,
they are damaged. Similarly if the Sree-bali vigraha is damaged special rites are to be
done as in the cass of ashtabandhakalasa. Similarly for changing the thazhikakkutam (sthoopa) special rites are necessary. Each step is important and has to be done carefully and after naveekarana-kalasa it is essential to have a Deva-prasna again (in the presence of Thanthri was conducted these rites) to ascertain the views ofthe deity on the proper execution of rites and to ascertain any lacunae.
