Home > Temples of Kerala > Other festival days Other festival daysIn almost all temples Onam, Vishu and Nira and Putthari are celebrated in a befitting manner. Thiruvonam asterisk in the month of Chingam is the avathaara-day of Lord Vaamana while Vishu (which falls on the 1st Metam of(Kollam Era) is the astronomical New Year day. Since Onam and Vishu are observed in all temples and by all Hindus no detailed accounts are necessary. On the other hand Nira and Putthari conducted in the Malayalam month of Karkkatakam deserves special mention. In some temples this ceremony is done in the month of Chingam. At an auspicious time either the corns of fresh harvested paddy or a para (a measure in the shape of a drum) filled up with the newly harvested paddy is kept at the namaskara-mandapa or in front of the deity. Pooja is also done to the newly harvested paddy corns with the manthras of the deity and there after hung at the sreekovil, thitappalli and other important places of the temple besides giving it as prasaada to devotees. Nivedya preferably palpaayasam made of putthari (rice taken from the new paddy) mixed with milk and sugar is prepared and offered to the deity. The corns so hung have to be kept at these places till the same time next year. The concept here is that this ceremony gives prosperity to the temple as well as to all the people.
