Home > Temples of Kerala > palliunartthal palliunartthalThe ritual of palliunartthal is waking up the deity from the nidra-samaadhi. In temples, as well as for all spiritual activities, the best time for getting up from sleep is brahma-muhoorttha which is 71/2 naazhikas (3 hours) before the sunrise. Therefore the time of palliunartthal in some of the prominent temples in the state, which follow the rituals scrupulously, is brahma-muhoorttha (eg.Sree Krishna temple, Guruvayur). It is seen that in majority of major temples in the state the time of palliunartthal ranges betweem 4 a.m and 5.30 am. Palliurtartthal is done by blowing the conch shell three times accompanied by paandi-mela (the instruments generally used being Kurum-kuzhal (shorter pipe), Sruthi, Thakil (drum) etc. Of course there are variations in the musical instruments used for palliunartthal between temples. In some cases Naadaswaram and Thakil are used, though Naadaswaram is not permissible within naalambalam as per Kerla tradition. Before palliunartthal at least the inner precincts of naalambalam., have to be swept and kept tidy and all the lamps lighted. Then the gates of temple at the gopura-dwaara and naalambalam are opened for allowing the devotees to enter these places. The garbha-grha is opened a little later by the Thanthri (High priest) or Mel-saanthi (Chief priest).
