Home > Temples of Kerala > Temple rites Peetha-prathishtha of valiya-balikallOn the forenoon of the eighth day the first rite is usha-pooja at the front of the sreekovil (natakkal-pooja) and prayers are held for obtaining the permission of the deity, viz. anujna, for the installation of valia-balikkall ie principal bali-peetha. Then the nirmaalya and the cloth on the valia-balikkall are removed followed by abhisheka and pooja. The prathishta rites associated with ashta-dik-paalas at the directions around the valia-balikkall are then completed. In some cases the ashta-dik-paalas are not installed as bali-peethas around it but it is conceived that they exist there. The padma, the top part of the valia-balikkall, is the most important one and therefore detailed pooja is done for it including aavaahana with beeja-manthra of the principal deity, snaana, neeraajana, abhisheka with kalasas, offering of clothes, nivedya with haviss (and bali to others), removal of nirmaalya, abhisheka and the prasanna-pooja. In this context it is relevant to note that if valia-balikkall is not installed along with bimba-prathishta, it is sufficient if a single slightly bigger bali-peetha, known locally as pookkallu, is installed after copducting homa, kalasapooja, etc similar to the rites for saptha-maathr:kkals (except the garbha-nyaasa rite). It is followed by bootha-sainhaara pooja;abhisheka of kalasa, nivedya, bali and prasanna-pooja.
