First the sayya-padma (which is rectangular in shape) is made and over it 8 dronas (one drona equals 4 paras) or lesser quantity of paddy is kept. Over it a cloth is spread. This is considered equivalent to forming a peetha. Over it a second layer is made with rice (half the quantity of paddy) with cloth over it. The subsequent layers are made of gingelly and cloth, mustard and cloth; darbha bed; black blanket and over it a cotton bed. Above all a satin or silk cloth is spread. A pillow is also kept and sayya-pooja is done with the manthra of the concerned deity. For Vishnu dwaadasa and sreebeeja manthras are used while for other deities the concerned moola-manthra of the deity and manthra of Bhuvaneswari. The sayya is used only in afternoon of the same day when bimba is taken out of jalaadhivasa and subjected to the rites of nethra-unmeelana, bimba-sodhana, bimba suddhi-kalabishekam and alankara-pooja
