The pooja time is when the shadow of a person is 12 feet in the afternoon. The temple authorities, however, conducts it at a fIxed time ie 4.30 p.m. This pooja was instituted by the Zamorin of Calicut as an atonement for challenging the power of the Goddess here. Legend says that the tutelar deity of Zamorin's wife was this Goddess and she had a wish to conduct a kalam-paattu in the temple but the Zamorin refused to oblige and insisted that the Goddess has to come to the kovilakam (residence) of Zamorin at Calicut and take the offering. On the previous night the Goddess appeared in a dream to the Thanthri and Ooraalars of the Thirumandhamkunnu temple, pronouncing, that a special pooja is to be conducted at thirinja-pantheerati time (ie 5 naazhikas before sunset) and accordingly it was done. Then the komaram (oracle) of the temple appeared at the time of pooja and proceeded to Calicut and demanded the share of kalam-paatt thereby satisfying the wish of that devoted lady. This frightened Zamorin who gave the share and thereafter instituted this pooja as a daily routine as an atonement.
