Thrikkakara Hymnology

Nammalvar, the Vaishnavite saint who lived in eighth century is the only alvar who has composed ten ‘pasurams’ on the deity at Thrikkakkara. These pasurams, the commentators say, convey the impression that the lord at Thrikkakarai reminded the alvar of the happy times he had with him on earlier occasions and with that as strength asked him to bear the burden cast by the pangs of separation now. In short the deity, according to his verses, apparently advised the alvar to get lost in recalling the sweet memories of the past and thereby bear with equanimity the current pangs due to separation. But alvar in every pasuram weeps uncontrollably and tells the perumal that to contemplate on and recollect the past memories of enjoyment of the company of the lord only heightened the present pain.

The maya man mentioned in the first couplet could be about Vamana who is said to have been a magical incarnation.
