Even though it claims an antiquity of more than 150 years, there is no solid historical evidence to support other than hearsay. The mosque is run by the Sunni sect f Muslims but is open to all who follow Islam. It is located mid way between padamugal and vazhakala and has an area of over 15 acres. It has a membership of over 3000 followers. The vazhakala market which is the main meat and fish market in Thrikakkara is owned and run by the mosque authorities and is a source of regular income. Other than the market, the mosque also runs a madrasa for children at padamugal a CBSE school and an Islamic college. According to Mr Abu Bakkar, the president of the mosque committee, the mosque that we see today is not the original mosque; the original one was demolished and new one built in its place to accommodate the growing congregation. The original mosque is said to have been about hundred to hundred and fifty years old. The mosque was established through a community initiative and the land was purchased through voluntary contribution of the followers as well as of the public. The lion’s share of the resources and effort were contributed by certain eminent families such as the elavakatt family, kiliangal family, neyveli family, mulackapilly family, peechampilly family, molayil family etc. (several of the roads in and around the place is named after these ancient Islamic families). The mosque today stands as a landmark of Thrikkakkara’s tryst with Islam and caters to the Muslim population’s spiritual needs.
