Chemmeen Mapas - Prawn Curry with Coconut Milk

Ingredients of Chemmeen Mapas

Serves: 4

A Christian dish.

250 gms prawns

1 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

A pinch of fenugreek seeds

1 medium-sized onion, sliced

4 green chillies, slit

12 cloves garlic, chopped

5-cm piece ginger, sliced

2 walnut-sized balls of seedless tamarind soaked in 2/3 cup water

½ tsp salt

¾ cup coconut milk(1st extract )

Mixed together:

2 tsp coriander powder

½ tsp red chilli powder

1 tbsp water

Method of Preparation of Chemmeen Mapas

  • Shell prawns, remove heads, devein and wash.
  • Heat oil in a pan and sprinkle in mustard seeds. When they start sputtering, add fenugreek, onion, green chillies, garlic and ginger, and fry till onion turns translucent.
  • Mix in spice paste and fry for 2 minutes.
  • Extract tamarind pulp and add with salt. Mix well and bring to boil.
  • Add prawns and cook till prawns are half done.
  • Pour in coconut milk, mix well, bring to boil and remove from heat.
  • Serve with appam, idiappam, pathiri or puttu.
