Meen Kuzhambu - Mashed Fish Curry with Coconut Milk

Ingredients

Serves: 6

A Christian dish.

500 gms fish fillet

6 shallots,chopped

6 green chillies,chopped

3 cloves garlic,chopped

3-cm piece ginger,chopped

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp salt

1 1/2 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 1/2 tsp white vinegar

3/4 cup coconut milk

Ground to a fine paste:

1/2 medium-sized,fresh coconut,grated

3/4 cup water

Method of Preparation

  • Clean fish,cut into 1-cm pieces and wash.
  • Place in a pan with 3/4 cup water and cook over low heat till tender.
  • Mash fish lightly.Mix in shallots,green chillies,garlic,ginger,turmeric and salt,and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a small pan and sprinkle in mustard seeds.When they start sputtering,add coconut paste and fry for 5 minutes,stirring constantly.
  • Gently mix into fish and cook over low heat till it boils.
  • Pour in vinegar and coconut milk,mix gently and remove from heat.
  • Serve with rice,porotta or kappa puzhukku.
