Meen Vevichathu - Spicy Fish Curry

Ingredients

Serves: 6

500 gms fish

1 1/2 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp fenugreek seeds (methi)

2 shallots,chopped

3 green chillies,slit

5-cm piece ginger,chopped

2 stalks curry leaves

2 tsp salt

3 petals cambodge,torn into pieces and soaked in 5 tbsp water

Ground to a paste:

5 shallots,chopped

2 cloves garlic,chopped

5-cm stick cinnamon,broken into pieces

2 cloves

1/2 tsp fennel seeds (badi saunf)

4 tsp red chilli powder

2 tsp coriander powder

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp black pepper powder

4 tsp water

Method of Preparation

  • Clean fish,cut into 5-cm pieces and wash.
  • Heat oil in a pan and sprinkle in mustard seeds.When they start sputtering add fenugreek and shallots,and fry till shallots turn brown.
  • Add green chillies,ginger,curry leaves and salt,and fry for 5 minutes,stirring constantly.
  • Mix in spice paste and fry for 2 minutes.
  • Add fish and cambodge with its soaking liquid and cook over low heat for 10 minutes.
