Pachhathakkali Chertha Chemmeen Thoran - Mashed Prawns with Coconut and Green Tomatoes

Ingredients of Pachhathakkali Chertha Chemmeen Thoran

Serves: 4

A Christian dish.

200 gms small or medium-sized prawns

3 medium-sized, green tomatoes, chopped

2 medium-sized onions, chopped

3-cm piece ginger, chopped

1 tsp salt

Ground to a coarse paste:

½ medium-sized, fresh coconut, grated

5 green chillies, chopped

½ tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp turmeric powder

Tempering:

1 ½ tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp parboiled rice

3 dry red chillies, torn into pieces

3 shallots, chopped

2 stalk curry leaves

Method of Preparation of Pachhathakkali Chertha Chemmeen Thoran

  • Shell prawns, remove heads, devein and wash. Chop into very small pieces and mash on a grinding stone. (If prawns are very large boil lightly before chopping and mashing)
  • Mix prawns with tomatoes, onions, ginger and salt in a pan.
  • Place pan over low heat and cook till water from prawns dries out.
  • Add coconut-spice paste and continue to cook over low heat till it turns completely dry. Remove from heat
  • Heat oil for tempering in a small pan and sprinkle in mustard seeds. When they start sputtering, add remaining ingredients and fry till shallots turn brown.
  • Pour contents of pan into prawns, mix well and serve.
