Unakka Meen Chamanthi Podi - Sun-dried Fish Chutney Powder with Coconut

Ingredients

Makes: 400 gms

200 gms sun dried fish (anchovy)

4 tsp + 4 tsp oil

1/2 medium-sized,fresh coconut,grated

10 dry red chillies,torn into pieces

5 shallots,chopped

A walnut-sized ball of seedless tamarind

3-cm piece ginger,chopped

1 stalk curry leaves

1 tsp salt

Method of Preparation

  • Wash fish and soak in water for an hour.Drain and dry thoroughly.
  • Heat 4 tsp oil in a frying pan,add fish and fry till golden brown.Remove from pan and set aside.
  • Add remaining oil to pan and heat through.Mix in remaining ingredients and fry,stirring constantly,till coconut turns brown.
  • Remove pan from heat,mix in fish and cool.
  • Grind to a coarse powder and serve as an accompaniment at a meal where rice is served.
  • Note: This chutney powder can be eaten dry or a little water can be added to make a thick paste.
  • Variation: Sun-dried prawns can be used in place of the fish.Soak them for 30 minutes only.
