Varutha Meen Palukari - Fried Fish Curry with Coconut Milk

Ingredients of Varutha Meen Palukari

Serves: 6

A Christian dish.

500 gms fish

1 cup oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

2 medium-sized onions, chopped

4 green chillies, chopped

2 stalk curry leaves

A walnut-sized ball of seedless tamarind soaked in 5 tbsp water

1 tsp salt

1 cup coconut milk (1st extract)

Ground to a fine paste:

4 shallots, chopped

3-cm piece ginger, chopped

4 cloves garlic, chopped

4 tsp red chilli powder

1 tsp coriander powder

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp salt

4 tsp water

Method of Preparation of Varutha Meen Palukari

  • Clean fish, cut into 3-cm pieces, wash and drain well.
  • Rub half the spice paste into fish and marinate for an hour.
  • Heat oil in a kadhai and deep-fry fish. Remove fish from kadhai, drain and set aside.
  • Reduce oil to 2 tbsp and sprinkle in mustard seeds. When they start sputtering, add onions, green chillies and curry leaves, and fry till onions turn translucent.
  • Extract tamarind pulp and strain into pan. Stir in salt and remaining spice paste, and fry for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Add fish and coconut milk. Mix gently, remove from heat and serve with rice or porotta.
